💡learnshiv newsletter - June 26th, 2024

Hi! Welcome to our 22nd newsletter! 💡learnshiv is here to make learning easy for you, whether it’s tech, social justice, or self-improvement content. In this constantly changing world, the only way to future-proof yourself is diversification, and that’s what I’m here to help you do.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this week’s newsletter:

  • ✏️ Defining: upskill, digital redlining, morning pages

  • 📒 Lesson Learned: Stick to your 4s, 5s and 6s

  • 🆓 Freebie: Email Marketing Ebook

  • 💡Learnshiv Content: A new course review (soon)

💡 GLOSSARY OF GROWTH

WORK Upskill is like giving your professional toolbox an upgrade by learning new in-demand skills or sharpening the ones you already have. This makes you a more competitive and qualified job seeker.

WORLD Digital Redlining describes the discriminatory practice of denying high-speed internet access to certain neighbourhoods, often low-income or minority communities. This lack of access creates a digital divide that further marginalizes these communities.

WELL-BEING — Morning Pages, a lesser-known journaling technique, involves free-writing three longhand pages first thing in the morning. This clears negative thoughts and sparks inspiration by letting your subconscious flow freely onto the page.

💡 LESSON LEARNED (Wellbeing + World)

Have you ever heard of the practice “stick to your 4s, 5s and 6s” as an approach to difficult conversations on contentious topics? This may be happening a lot lately, as there are many world issues related to politics and social justice that you may find yourself debating about.

It goes like this:

  • 7, 8, 9s - This person seems open to hearing your perspective. They ask questions, actively listen, and are willing to consider different viewpoints. In these cases, feel free to have a full conversation and share your ideas.

  • 4, 5, 6s - This person might be unsure or have some preconceived notions. They might interrupt or disagree but seem willing to listen at least a little. Here, focus on explaining your viewpoint calmly and offering evidence to support your points.

  • 1, 2, 3s - This person seems very closed-minded or unwilling to consider different perspectives. They might resort to personal attacks or refuse to listen at all. In these cases, it's okay to protect your peace and either politely disengage from the conversation or change the subject.

Benefits:

  • Self-Awareness: This approach helps you be more aware of the situation and choose a communication style that's most likely to be productive.

  • Focus on Communication Goals: It keeps the focus on having a meaningful conversation rather than trying to "win" an argument.

  • Healthy Boundaries: It encourages you to set boundaries and protect yourself from negativity.

Remember: People can change their receptiveness over time. Someone who seems like a 1, 2 or 3 today might be open to a conversation later.

When you’re having a difficult conversation, try to carefully assess the situation and give it a number in your head that corresponds to the above categories. This will help you navigate a conversation more effectively while protecting your peace.

💡 F R E E B I E (Work)

I’m always looking to upskill when it comes to email marketing, and I found this free ebook online.

The landing page says, “In this book, I'll show you how I and my students land gigs and get paid $2,000 -$5,000+/month per client — and how you can use the same strategies to land your next client in as little as 7 days.”

It’s a great step-by-step guide on picking your niche, creating your portfolio and closing clients.

Let me know if you like it.
